New Five-Period Schedule Proposed for R.C.H.S.
Each Class Would Last 70 Minutes,
Some Requirements Would Change

By Natalie Haarman

Roughly seven weeks after announcing that R.C.H.S. would definitely see major scheduling changes in the future, Principal Jennifer Mattingly was ready to propose a new schedule starting at the beginning of 2009-2010 school year. The first reading of the proposal for the new schedule took place at a Site-Based Council meeting on November 13th, and a vote will come later.

Out of all the other schedule prospects, the decision has been narrowed down to one option by the department chairs of the school and school principals: the five block schedule with 70 minute classes. According to Mrs. Mattingly, the new schedule would include some classes that last all year and some that last only one semester.

Many changes would have to be made to the school day to accommodate the new schedule. Like, for instance, some classes will be dropped, like the Data and Measurement class that sophomores are required to have currently. Also, some required classes may be moved to a different year, and all classes (even A.P. classes and classes lasting only one semester) would be counted as just one credit.

The total number of credits required to graduate would also likely change. Starting with next year’s freshmen class, there will be only 26 required credits instead of the normal 28.

Another major change would involve the number of elective classes available. For this year’s junior and sophomore classes, there would be eight electives that they can have their senior year.

Mattingly said that the new schedule is not set in stone yet; however, she is going was set to officially propose it to the Site-Based Council on November 19, 2008.
