Office Looks to Increase A/A
to Weekly Event in 08-09

The administration at RCHS has put an even more noticeable emphasis on A/A throughout the beginning of this school year. Out of the first 30 days of school during the 2008-09 year, students have been to A/A homerooms over twelve times, a large increase from last year’s A/A occurrences.

What exactly is A/A? The name stands for "Advisor/Advisee" and, according to Principal Mattingly, we go to it for several reasons, including: testing scrimmages, allowing homeroom teachers a chance to talk with students’ parents, and passing out information to the student body. We also go to A/A so students can receive and turn in progress reports, review transcripts, and vote on various school activities and competitions, such as: Student Council, Jamboree Bowl King and Queen, and Homecoming Queen and King.

Some students and teachers are concerned about how the increase in A/A is affecting class time. To remedy this, the school administration has come up with a few solutions, according to Mrs. Mattingly. One of the steps the office has decided to take is to rotate classes so that first block and second block aren’t the only classes affected by A/A scheduling. They have also divided the time missing between first block and second block.

As for the rest of the year, the amount of time we will use in A/A is not known because scheduling occurs as needed. However, Mrs. Mattingly said that the goal this year is to meet in A/A every week. Last year, RCHS students went to A/A an average of about once per month.

Even with the goal of meeting in A/A once per week, RCHS students might not have quite so many homeroom meetings in the future. "After a while, we might not have them as much," Assistant Principal Mrs. Hamilton commented.
